Ordering Process: 3D Printed PTFE Parts

  • Placing and Order

    While this proprietary 3D printing technology for PTFE is not yet fully commercialized, 3M is accepting orders and manufacturing custom parts at our facility. If you have a CAD file or part idea you’d like to discuss, please follow the steps below to make sure it is a good fit for 3D printed PTFE, and then contact us directly to explore next steps.

  • Before you start

    Before submitting your file, please start by ensuring your design is ready:

    1. Take the Tech Check: See whether your part is a good candidate for additive manufacturing.
    2. Review the Design Guidelines (PDF, 217.10 KB): Make ensure your design is compatible with our current processing parameters.
    3. Contact a 3M Technical Expert: Get information about design evaluation and trial part orders; please note that we do not offer raw material samples. You will be asked to provide your global location, the end application for your part, and other information required to ensure compliance with applicable trade and export control regulations. Please also advise us if you require a CDA.
  • Submitting your CAD file

    Please contact us directly to submit your CAD file, ensuring all units of measure are properly identified. Once you submit your file, our team will evaluate your design and provide a detailed part quote.

  • Cost and timing

    Both lead time and final part cost depend on many factors, as noted below. Parts can be produced in as few as 10 business days once the part design and associated support structures have been established (for example, for reoccurring part orders). Additional time may be required in some cases, such as first-time part production, and particularly for highly complex geometries.

    • Part size: Larger parts are typically more expensive and require longer build times, especially part designs with a larger “z” dimension. Refer to the design guidelines for current size limits.
    • Part complexity: 3D printing is better suited for complex designs than traditional manufacturing methods. However, the complexity of your part can still affect its cost. Additional time for designing support structures and post-processing may be required to ensure build success.
    • Part quantity: There is no minimum order quantity. However, maximizing the number of parts within the build volume is more efficient, and will help lower your overall cost per part.
    • Support structures: Designs that take advantage of self-supporting features and follow the recommendations in our design guidelines will typically help lower your final part cost. Some designs may require additional material and time for support structure design and post-processing. 3M technical experts will create the support structures and can help optimize your part design for 3D printing.
