    EMI Absorbers

    3M material science at work - flexible composite materials incorporating specialized magnetic particles and a non-conductive PSA to absorb EMI across a wide frequency range. Very thin versions allow for easy workability and fewer redesigns. 3M also offers a hybrid version that performs both electromagnetic shielding and absorbing across broadband frequencies.

    Thin magnetic materials helps you protect components and circuits and improve your system efficiency. High magnetic permeability and low magnetic loss help enable flux field redirection for applications less than 15 MHz.

Attach to noisy component

  • Attach to noisy component

    PCB/FPC traces are potential sources of radiated EMI, and they can propogate EMI signals between active modules. These EMI signals can be mitigated by placing absorbers over the affected traces. Similarly, enclosures such as shielding cans are potential sources of externally radiated EMI emissions as well as noise coupled between elements inside an enclosure. Here, placing a thin magnetic absorber over or inside of the conductive shield can significantly help improve the overall electromagnetic environment while conserving space.

  • Attached to microprocessors

    High clock frequencies of data modules and ICs can lead to induced internal and external EMI in nearby environments. This EMI noise can affect telecom and Wi-Fi frequency bands. This can be prevented by placing absorbers with high magnetic loss to capture both clock frequencies and their harmonics. Thin absorbers can be easily placed over aggressor circuits to suppress noise. ICs can also create heat, so silicone resin absorbers are a good choice for noise suppression in elevated temperatures.

  • EMI absorbing performance

    Available in a range of thicknesses and performance characteristics, our EMI/RF absorbers allow you to suppress noise and protect nearby electronics, all at the targeted permeability and magnetic loss level for your target frequencies. You can minimise noise and crosstalk, increase high-frequency SNR and improve signal integrity and reliability at frequencies up to 10 GHz.

    Absorber performance defined
    Operating frequency range is where the imaginary part of the permeability graph exceeds ~50% of its maximum value. Target frequency range is the "sweet spot" for peak performance. This is based on frequencies in key applications (ie. LTE, Wi-Fi). EMI reduction axis is primarily based on magnetic properties of the materials (ie. permeability, permittivity).


  • Magnetic shielding performance

    These EMI/EMC shielding solutions provide magnetic shielding to help protect electronic devices from external low magnetic fields (<15 MHz). These materials deliver targeted permeability for efficiently shielding the magnetic fields, especially EM80KM due to the high magnetic permeability. Some of our other materials also feature excellent EMI absorbing performance from 200 MHz – 4 GHz.

    In this demonstration, you’ll see the effects of a range of materials on a spinning rotor magnet. A 0.7 mm plastic plate and 0.1 mm copper foil have no effect – the magnetic field remains unblocked and the rotor keeps spinning. Then we introduce 3M™ Flux Field Directional Materials, which provide partial and full magnetic flux shielding to slow or stop the rotor. 3M provides a range of magnetic shielding solutions, including materials that can function as both magnetic shields and absorbers.
